About Jeep Cars
In 1940, the Jeep story began. The U.S. Army needed a vehicle that could be used for a variety of purposes during World War II. This requirement was outlined on July 7, 1941, by the Quartermaster Corps. Ford, American Bantam and Willys-Overland had the task of creating this unique vehicle.
Bantam produced the first Jeep in 1940. It was called the Bantam Pilot BRC-60. Around 70 units were made. Ford made only two cars at first and named them PYGMY. Ford increased production in 1941 and produced 3,700 Ford GPs. Willys produced 1,553 Model MAs. It was the start of Jeep.
According to legend, the name “Jeep”, short for “general-purpose,” was coined by mechanics in World War I as a way of referring to new vehicles that were being tested.
American Motors Corporation acquired Jeep in 1970 from Kaiser. AMC launched the CJ 7 with a V8. AMC also offered the sporty 2-door Jeep Cherokee full-size, an automatic transmission, and a family-friendly Wagoneer wagon. In 1984, the second generation of smaller Cherokees hit the market.
Jeep launched the 4-litre inline engine in 1987. It was known for its high performance. Chrysler Corporation acquired Jeep in 1987 after AMC’s financial problems.
