The jet-black Skoda logo has adorned cars since 1895, when the Czech Republic-based automobile manufacturer was created under the name Laurin and Klement, after its founders who started out making bicycles. They soon transitioned to producing motorcycles at the turn of the 20th century, cars by 1905, and trucks in the 1920s. The company was acquired by the arms manufacturer Skoda Works in 1924, and all further production was done under the name Skoda.
After World War II, Skoda refreshed a number of its best-selling models and produced cars with a strong reputation, such as the Spartak, the Octavia, and the Felicia. Estelle and Rapid were also champions in their categories, dominating the RAC rally for 17 consecutive years during the 1970s and 1980s. However, by the 1980s, Skoda had gained a reputation for unreliability.
Volkswagen began acquiring share equity in Skoda in 1991, becoming 100% owners by 2000. Thanks to Volkswagen’s expertise and investment, Skoda saw significant improvements in both design and engineering. By 2011, Skoda achieved record-breaking sales.
