About Isuzu Cars

Isuzu’s journey began in 1916 when Ishika wajima Shipbuilding and Engineering Co. Ltd. and Tokyo Gas and Electric Industrial Co. signed a joint agreement for the production of automobiles. In 1918, this collaboration was strengthened by a technical partnership with Wolseley Motors Limited. The Wolseley A-9 model was the first product on the market. Ishikawajima Automotive Works later merged with DAT Automobile Manufacturing Inc., forming Automobile Industries Co., Ltd., and was reorganized in 1937 as Tokyo Automobile Industries Co., Ltd. In 1949, the company took on the name Isuzu (“fifty Bells”). Isuzu launched the Hillman Minx in 1953, a licensed passenger car from Rootes Group. In 1961, Isuzu’s first product was the Bellel.

Isuzu had a vision of growth and sought to expand domestically as well as internationally by forming strategic commercial partnerships. This period was marked by short-lived partnerships with Fuji Heavy Industries (from 1966-1968) as well as Mitsubishi (1968-1969). In 1971, Isuzu signed a capital-sharing deal with General Motors. The partnership opened up international markets. The Chevrolet LUV was the first Isuzu vehicle to be sold in the United States. Both companies co-developed a T-car called the Gemini. It was sold in Australia and the U.S. under the Holden Gemini name. The partnership was mutually advantageous, as GM gained traction in the Japanese market.

Isuzu started selling its brand products in 1981. The Isuzu P’Up is the first vehicle to be introduced under this company’s name. Isuzu began to phase out the sedan and compact car market in 1995, focusing on other markets.

Isuzu is also a well-known diesel engine maker, having supplied power plants to a number of companies, including General Motors, the Renault-Nissan Alliance, and others. Isuzu has experienced many market fluctuations over the past 15 years and has pursued numerous joint ventures. In 1999, GM acquired control of Isuzu by increasing its stake to 49%. In 2002, Isuzu repurchased its shares, reducing GM’s stake to 12%.
Isuzu is now part of the GM Group and remains a leader in medium-duty trucks and pickups. It has a strong network of dealers and a significant presence in the U.S. market.
