About Land Rover Cars

Maurice Wilks was the chief designer at Rover and developed the first Land Rover on his farm in Anglesey, Wales, in 1948. Wilks, the chief designer of Rover, was inspired by an American Jeep from World War II that he had at his holiday home on Anglesey in Wales. The Jeep chassis was used to build the first Land Rover with a “centre steer”. Birmabright was used to make its body, which is a lightweight and rust proof aluminium-magnesium alloy. After the war, due to a shortage of steel, aircraft aluminium became readily available. Birmabright’s corrosion resistance contributed to Land Rover’s durability in even the most extreme environments. Land Rover boasts that more than 75% of its vehicles are still in service today.

Early models were limited to light green shades due to the use of military surplus cockpit paint. All Land Rovers, up until recently, were built using a sturdy box-section ladder frame chassis. In the UK, the original price of this vehicle was PS450. The first production year saw 3,048 vehicles, and by 1950, the number had risen to 16,000 units.

Long Bennington was the site of field testing for the first Land Rover Series I. Series II appeared in 1958 and Series III in 1971, both with nearly identical designs but still unsurpassed in terms of off-road performance. Land Rover’s lineup was expanded with the Range Rover – the first luxury four-wheel drive vehicle in the world. The Range Rover, powered by a Rover engine with 4WD and independent suspension and equipped with an independent suspension system, combined the off-road capabilities of Land Rovers with exceptional comfort and a luxury interior. It redefined the perception of 4x4s.

For its ease of maintenance, the British Army chose the 2.5 litre 4-cylinder 300TDi over the electronically-controlled 2.5 litre 5-cylinder TD5. The engine was still used in certain export markets. Units were built in a Ford factory in Brazil where Land Rovers are produced under license. The engine was also used to produce Ford pickup trucks locally. In the UK, the TDi was phased out in 2006.

Land Rover and Jaguar reunited under Ford’s ownership. Both had been previously part of British Leyland. The two brands had shared distribution channels and sales networks in many countries. In 1989, Discovery was launched to fill the gap between Range Rover’s luxurious luxury and Defender’s utilitarian Defender. It offered a more affordable alternative.

Land Rover was a separate BMW division from 1994 to 2000. Ford bought it and, in 2008, when Ford faced financial difficulties, sold Land Rover along with Jaguar to Tata Group.
