About Porsche Cars
Porsche was founded on June 8, 1948. The company began as “Dr. Ing. Ferdinand Porsche founded the “h. c. F. Porsche GmbH in 1931. The headquarters of the company were in central Stuttgart.
The company initially focused more on consulting and development services than it did on producing cars under its brand. In the first instance, the German government commissioned the company to create a car that would appeal to the masses. The result was the Volkswagen Beetle, which is still one of the most popular cars in history. In 1939, the Porsche 64 was a modified Beetle that used many of the same parts.
The Reutter Company of Stuttgart, in late 1949, commissioned Porsche to build 500 car bodies for the redesigned 356. This model would later become the Porsche 356, which had a top speed of 140 kph. It was sold at DM 12,000 and became a classic. Ferry Porsche sold 5,000 cars by 1954.
In 1953, Porsche introduced its iconic badge. By 1959, it was developing a new line of cars. The Porsche 901, or “Butzi” Porsche as it was also called, was first unveiled in 1963 at the IAA. The car was not available until 1964.
Peugeot objected to the 901 designation in late 1964. They claimed it was patentable. Porsche renamed it the 911 and sold the car in Germany as well as internationally for DM 21900. The 911 was an air-cooled rear-engine sports car. Porsche had already achieved considerable success in racing with models like the 550 Spyder.
In the 1960s, Porsche began sequentially numbering all of its projects. The 911 became the most successful and iconic model for Porsche, both on the racetrack as well as on the road. Porsche’s 911 is the most iconic model and continues to be produced today despite numerous updates and modifications over the years.
The 912 was based on the 911, but it had a 4-cylinder engine from the 356. Customers could choose a cheaper option.
