The Swatch CEO Nicolas Hayek had a vision to create a car that carried the Swatch brand. He approached Volkswagen with the idea, but the automaker declined because of internal struggles. A Daimler-Benz team was assembled to lead the Smart project, including engineers Johann Tomforde and Christoph Baubin, as well as Hans Jurg Schar, a Swatch marketing expert behind the iconic 1980s campaigns. Together, they established ‘Smartville,’ the first Smart factory, in Hambach, France, in 1994. The second assembly plant followed on October 27, 1997, inaugurated by French President Jacques Chirac and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl.
Tomforde implemented a cost-saving system where suppliers designed, assembled, and installed their modules directly onto the final car, working through their own teams.Contracts were secured with Faurecia for seats, VDO for interiors, and Magna for chassis manufacturing.
The first challenge was coming up with a name for the car. In contrast to Hayek’s desire to incorporate Swatch, Daimler-Benz preferred a neutral name. The acronym ‘Smart’ was selected because Swatch Mercedes Art is an acronym for smart.
Daimler-Benz originally planned to release the Smart City-Coupe in March 1998, but delayed its release until October 1998. Compact, reliable, stylish, and affordable, the car was an instant hit when it debuted in Europe.
During the late 1990s, Daimler-Benz acquired Swatch’s remaining shares, giving Smart greater economic autonomy. In 2003 and 2004, Smart introduced the Smart Forfour, a four-door supermini, and the Smart Roadster.
Between 2003 and 2006, Smart faced significant financial challenges, losing nearly €4 billion. These losses led to the liquidation of Smart GmbH, with operations absorbed directly by DaimlerChrysler.
Smart also ventured into electric vehicles, unveiling the ‘micro hybrid drive’ version of the Fortwo at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. Plans for a new car, the ‘Formore,’ combining the Forfour body with Mercedes C-class hardware, were ultimately shelved due to budget cuts.
Today, Smart operates as part of Daimler AG under the Mercedes-Benz Cars division, focusing on the Fortwo Coupe and Cabrio models.
