Toyota Jidosha kabushiki-gaisha, commonly known as ‘Toyota’ today, is the world’s biggest car manufacturer. Established as a division of The Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in 1933, the founder’s son, Kiichiro Toyoda, decided to pivot the company toward manufacturing cars. To prepare, he travelled to Europe to learn about gas-powered engines. The Japanese government supported this move, seeing it as a cost-saving measure and a way to secure vehicles for the war with China.
The first engine, the Type A, was placed in the G1 truck and the Model A1 passenger car.
During WWII, Toyota continued producing trucks, and their factories in Aichi were fortunate to escape bombing.
After the war, Toyota resumed car production, but their biggest success at the time came from manufacturing buses and trucks. In 1947, they introduced the Model SA, known as the Toyopet. The subsequent Model SF proved more successful and was even used as a taxi. Production ramped up further with the RH model, featuring an upgraded 48 HP engine, compared to the SF’s 27 horsepower.
The company opened its first dealership in the United States in 1957, followed by a production facility in Brazil two years later in 1959.This expansion was aided by RFD automobiles and the availability of genuine Toyota parts, which improved their market reach.
In the 1970s, rising gas prices in the U.S. forced local manufacturers to create smaller cars. Toyota was already ahead with its lineup of small, fuel-efficient models, earning the Toyota Corolla the title of America’s favourite compact car.
Despite this success, Toyota struggled in the luxury car market. Neither the Crown nor the Cressida sold well, and luxury car sales across the board declined in the U.S. during the 1980s.
Today, Toyota continues to thrive with its hybrid model, the Toyota Prius and is working on the Toyota Plug-in HV—an electric car powered by a battery pack.
